Leonardo DiCaprio House: Inside His Eco-Friendly Malibu Homes & Palm Springs Estate

Leonardo DiCaprio has spent almost thirty years quietly building one of the most interesting property portfolios in Hollywood. Unlike most celebrity collections, his is not just about size or price. From a cliff-top compound in the Hollywood Hills to a mid-century modern estate in Palm Springs, a string of Malibu beach houses and two eco-certified apartments in New York, the thread running through it all is the same one that runs through his public life: the environment.

He bought his first Malibu beach house in 1998, fresh from the success of Titanic, for $1.6 million. He sold it 23 years later for $10.3 million. In between, he has bought land, a private island and a house for his mother — and he has kept coming back to the same idea: homes that tread lightly on the planet. This is the full story of the Leonardo DiCaprio house collection, with every price and date verified from reputable reporting.

Who Is Leonardo DiCaprio?

Leonardo DiCaprio was born on 11 November 1974 in Los Angeles, California. He became a household name as a teenager, earned his first Academy Award nomination for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), and became a global star with Titanic (1997), one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

His later career brought acclaimed roles in The Aviator, The Departed, Inception, Django Unchained, The Wolf of Wall Street and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. In 2016 he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for The Revenant.

Away from film, DiCaprio is one of Hollywood’s best-known environmental campaigners. He founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to support conservation and climate projects around the world, and that commitment shows up again and again in the homes he chooses to buy.

Where Does Leonardo DiCaprio Live Now?

DiCaprio’s main base is his compound in the Bird Streets neighbourhood of the Hollywood Hills, above the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. He has been adding to it for decades, and it remains his home base between film projects.

Malibu is his second home in every sense: he has owned three different properties along its coastline, including the beach house he bought in 2021. Palm Springs is his desert retreat, New York his East Coast base, and Belize — where he owns a 104-acre private island — his long-term eco project.

The Hollywood Hills Compound: His Main Base

DiCaprio’s Los Angeles home is not a single house but a compound, built up piece by piece since the 1990s. According to Realtor.com, it began in 1994, when he bought two side-by-side properties on Oriole Way in the Bird Streets, one of them from Madonna, for a reported $4 million combined.

Over the years he kept buying the neighbours. The grounds now include more than one pool, solar panels, thick hedges for privacy and a basketball court — which once landed him in a dispute with the neighbours, who sued in 2007 claiming the digging for the court had weakened the hillside under their deck and pool.

In December 2022 he bought the house next door in an off-market deal for a reported $10.5 million, taking the compound to four houses and four pools across about five acres. The compound has also been rented out to actor friends over the years, reportedly including his Great Gatsby co-star Tobey Maguire.

It is a fitting home base for an actor who values privacy above almost everything else: hidden behind hedges and gates, high above the city, and assembled so slowly that few people noticed it happening.

Malibu: Three Chapters on the Coast

The Carbon Beach bungalow (1998–2021)

DiCaprio’s first Malibu home is the stuff of property legend. In 1998, fresh from Titanic, he bought a 1950s two-storey bungalow on Carbon Beach — nicknamed “Billionaire’s Beach” — for $1.6 million, according to property records cited by the Los Angeles Times.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house measured just 1,765 square feet, with a beach-facing balcony and a patio hot tub leading straight onto the sand. He listed it for $10.95 million in 2016, rented it out for $25,000 a month, and finally sold it in November 2021 for $10.3 million — more than six times what he paid.

The Paradise Cove land (2017)

In January 2017, DiCaprio paid $23 million for a 1.76-acre parcel in Paradise Cove, Malibu. All that stood on it was a tiny 610-square-foot cottage — but the previous owner, billionaire Vinnie Viola, had already won approval to demolish it and build a much larger two-storey home, with a swimming pool, a cliffside deck and private beach access. It was a land purchase, pure and simple: one of the rarest stretches of Malibu beachfront, bought for what could be built there.

The 2021 beach house

In July 2021, DiCaprio bought another Malibu beachfront home — this time a roughly 3,300-square-foot house on Pacific Coast Highway — for $13.75 million, through a company run by his longtime business manager. The four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home has multiple decks, a sauna and private access to El Sol Beach.

It did not stay a quiet purchase for long. In July 2025 he listed it for sale at $23 million, while also offering it for rent at $65,000 a month. When no buyer appeared, he cut the asking price to $19.99 million and the rent to $59,000 a month — and in April 2026 he pulled the home off the market altogether.

Palm Springs: The Dinah Shore Estate

Perhaps the most distinctive property in DiCaprio’s portfolio is his Palm Springs estate. In March 2014 he paid $5.23 million for the former home of big-band singer Dinah Shore, in the Old Las Palmas neighbourhood at 432 Hermosa Place.

Designed by celebrated mid-century modern architect Donald Wexler and built in 1964, the estate covers around 7,022 square feet on a 1.3-acre lot, with six bedrooms and seven-and-a-half bathrooms. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames the San Jacinto Mountains, and the property includes a main house, a guesthouse and a casita, plus a swimming pool, a tennis court and a detached gym.

DiCaprio does not live there full-time. Instead, the estate has been offered as a luxury holiday rental, at around $3,750 a night — one of the most famous celebrity homes in Palm Springs that ordinary visitors can actually stay in.

Beverly Hills Mansion

In December 2021, DiCaprio added a Beverly Hills mansion to the collection, paying $9.9 million for a home listed at $10.2 million. Built in 1936 and renovated by the previous owners — who had bought it in 2016 for $6.1 million — the house covers around 5,000 square feet, with six bathrooms, a chef’s kitchen, white oak floors and a grand curved staircase in the entryway.

Behind high walls and a gate, the property has an inground pool with a pool house and a fire pit area. In 2025, the home was listed for rent at $32,500 a month, according to Mansion Global.

New York: Two Eco-Friendly Apartments

DiCaprio’s New York homes say more about his environmental beliefs than any of his California properties.

In 2008, he bought his first East Coast home: an apartment in The Riverhouse, an eco-friendly high-rise in Battery Park City, for $3.67 million. In March 2014 he bought the unit next door for $8 million. The building is packed with green features, including solar panels, filtered water and double-filtered air, a 50-foot lap pool, a yoga studio, its own water treatment facility and a 24/7 concierge.

Two months later, in May 2014, he spent $10 million on an apartment in the Delos building at 66 East 11th Street in Greenwich Village — the first ever WELL Certified residential building. Its wellness features included vitamin C-infused showers, purified air and water, in-duct aromatherapy, posture-supporting flooring and circadian lighting designed to mimic dawn. He rented it out for $25,000 a month from March 2015, then sold it in 2016 for $8 million — a rare $2 million loss on a DiCaprio deal.

Los Feliz: A Home for His Mother

In May 2021, DiCaprio bought a Spanish Colonial Revival home in Los Feliz for $7.1 million — reportedly as a birthday gift for his mother, Irmelin Indenbirken. The 1928 house, previously owned by Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his husband Justin Mikita, covers nearly 5,000 square feet on half an acre, with four bedrooms, a library, a swimming pool, a spa and a detached area for yoga and meditation. Before Ferguson, it had belonged to Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, who bought it in 1998 for $1.4 million.

It was not his first Los Feliz purchase. In 2018 he paid $4.91 million for a home from musician Moby, also reportedly for a family member. He listed it for $5.8 million in August 2021 and sold it to singer Miguel in February 2022 for $4.9 million — essentially breaking even.

Blackadore Caye: The Private Island in Belize

The most ambitious property in DiCaprio’s portfolio is not a house at all. In 2005, he bought Blackadore Caye — a 104-acre private island off the coast of Belize, west of Ambergris Caye — with Cayo Espanto owner Jeff Gram for a reported $1.75 million.

His plan, developed with luxury developer Paul Scialla under the name “Blackadore Caye: A Restorative Island”, was to build an eco-resort designed by architect Jean-Michel Gathy, with dozens of guest villas and private residences powered entirely by solar energy, alongside mangrove restoration and the protection of the surrounding reef. Around 58% of the island was to be left untouched as a conservation zone.

The resort was originally expected to open in 2018. After years of delays, redesigns and environmental consultations, it had still not opened as of October 2026 — a reminder that even a $1.75 million island does not guarantee a smooth build.

What Makes His Homes Eco-Friendly?

DiCaprio’s green credentials are not a marketing line — they are built into the properties themselves. Solar panels feature at his Hollywood Hills compound and at The Riverhouse in New York. His Greenwich Village apartment sat in the first WELL Certified residential building in the world, with purified air and water and lighting designed around the body’s natural rhythms. And his Belize island was conceived from the start as a restorative project, designed to heal the ecosystem rather than simply sit on top of it.

It is a consistent pattern across almost thirty years of buying: the homes get bigger and more expensive, but the environmental thread never disappears.
